30 April 2022 | Freetown, Sierra Leone

Allies in Development (AiD) participated in a policy dialogue convened by the Women’s Forum Network to discuss progress on the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Bill, which had recently been presented to Parliament and was at the time progressing through the final stages of the legislative process.

The meeting brought together member organizations of the Women’s Forum Network, government representatives, development partners, and women’s rights advocates to reflect on the collective efforts that contributed to advancing the Bill and to discuss the next steps toward its implementation.

A national coalition for women's rights

Allies in Development is a member of the Women’s Forum Network, a national coalition of women-led organizations and women leaders working collectively to advance gender equality, women’s rights, and women’s empowerment across Sierra Leone.

The Network brings together organizations from all regions of the country to advocate for stronger legal protections, increased representation of women, and policies that promote equality and social justice. A cross-section of members participated in consultations and advocacy efforts that informed the development and advancement of the GEWE Bill.

Recognizing leadership and partnership

The dialogue provided an opportunity to recognize the leadership and collaboration that supported the Bill’s progress.

Allies in Development extends its appreciation to the Women’s Forum Network for convening the discussion and fostering collaboration among organizations working to advance women’s rights in Sierra Leone.

We also acknowledge the contributions of:

  • The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs for its leadership in advancing the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Bill through Parliament.
  • UN Women Sierra Leone for its continued technical and strategic support to efforts promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the country.

Our committment

As a member of the Women’s Forum Network, Allies in Development remains committed to working alongside government, civil society organizations, and development partners to promote policies and programmes that advance gender equality, strengthen the rights of women and girls, and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable Sierra Leone.
