Allies in Development joins Women's Forum Network to advance advocacy for women's political representation

30 July 2022 | Freetown, Sierra Leone

Allies in Development (AiD) participated in a strategic advocacy meeting convened by the Women’s Forum Network to finalize key advocacy messages and strategies in support of the adoption of the Proportional Representation (District Block) electoral system ahead of Sierra Leone’s 2023 General Elections.

The meeting brought together member organizations of the Women’s Forum Network from across Sierra Leone to coordinate advocacy efforts around the Public Elections Bill, which was under consideration by Parliament at the time.

Strengthening women's representation in decision-making

Section 59 of the proposed Public Elections Bill introduced the option of a Proportional Representation (District Block) electoral system. Under the proposed framework, one in every three candidates on a party list would be required to be a woman, creating an important opportunity to increase women’s representation in Parliament and Local Councils.

Participants discussed coordinated advocacy messages aimed at encouraging the adoption of the system as a means of promoting more inclusive political participation and strengthening women’s representation in public decision-making.

Why representation matters

Women’s equal participation in political leadership is an important component of gender equality and democratic governance. Increasing women’s representation in elected office contributes to more inclusive decision-making and helps ensure that the experiences and priorities of women and girls are reflected in public policy.

For organizations working to prevent violence against women and girls, expanding women’s participation in political processes can also contribute to creating safer and more inclusive civic spaces, including reducing barriers and risks associated with women’s participation in elections.

Working through collective action

As a member of the Women’s Forum Network, Allies in Development joined fellow civil society organizations in supporting a coordinated advocacy approach that promoted greater opportunities for women’s political participation.

The Network also expressed support for the leadership of the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs in advancing measures intended to strengthen women’s representation in public office.

Allies in Development remains committed to working collaboratively with civil society partners to promote gender equality, strengthen women’s leadership, and support policies that create more inclusive institutions and opportunities for women and girls across Sierra Leone.
